“The Right Place at the Right Time”. But, can you put yourself there?
You have heard this old saying time and again. The folks at lifehack suggest that it isn’t really luck, but a process of three “P’s” that could put you in the right place:
1. Proximity
“You cannot catch a fish without being near the water.”
2. Practice
“The fish not caught on the first try is larger when finally caught.”
3. Persistence
“If you do not fish often, the fish have little chance to bite.”

Or, perhaps when the fish is much bigger…
This week Nikon suggested it wasn’t Practice, Proximity, or Persistence. When it comes to photography: It is equipment, namely theirs. This post on facebook, which I am sure was meant innocently enough, brought an absolute firestorm of reactions:
A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Do any of our facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses? Which is your favorite and what types of situations do you use it for?

While 1,900 people simply “liked” this comment, as of this writing, 4,000 chose to offer responses. Many were not happy with the suggestion that somehow the lens made the photographer, and aimed their ire directly at Nikon:
- That was really an ignorant thing to post. A real slap in the face to photographers everywhere. I have lost ALL my respect for Nikon.
- oh god, what did you smoke before posting this?
- bet the PR guy for Nikon is looking for a new job
- A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Yes, indeed! That’s why I end-up using Canon L lenses!
- Over 4,000 comments hahah. This cracks me up. I hope your page got hacked!
- nikon i do like u guys a lot, but please don’t embarrass me like this =_=
- this post was so last week. Nikon needs to update its status to offend more photographers worldwide.
- The longer this post remains on this page, the more damage it’s going to be done to the brand. I’m surprised no one has blogged this and kept the comments on said pdf…. all 1,800+ and counting

So, which is it? Luck, but luck that is earned by practice and perseverance? Or luck that is earned by NOT putting yourself in harm’s way?
Or perhaps it is all in the definition. If you are the shooter, you’re somethimes just in the right place. If you are the “shoot-ee”, sometimes things just get spilled on you.

What is your experience? Is the best pic you’ve ever taken the result of being in the right place, and at the right time? Did you give it a whole lot of thought, and you could have captured it with a pinhole camera?
